Many children across East Africa lack basic literacy skills; this is according to a report released by Uwezo program on the education status across east Africa. In Kenya 70% of children in well off households are performing better in literacy and numeracy tests compared to 44% from the ultra-poor households. And the children from poor backgrounds are however performing better than their counterparts in both Uganda and Tanzania.
