Polycarp Igathe’s resignation yesterday as Nairobi deputy governor has once more revived debate, on what should happen in the event of a vacancy in the office of the deputy governor.

The constitution is silent on this point. a bill, drafted by senate majority leader Kipchumba Murkomen proposes that the governor nominates his deputy, who should be approved by the county assembly.

The bill is expected to be top of the senate’s agenda when sessions resume in February.
