The Kenya Agricultural and Plantation Workers’ Union has issued a seven day strike notice to employers in the tea industry, starting today. The workers say that the employers, through their Kenya Tea Growers Association, has failed to implement the 30% wage increase that as ordered by the labour court four years ago, and willfully stalled any efforts of a negotiation. The workers now want the employer to immediately implement the 30% increase as ordered by the court, and then backdate it to 2014 when the judgement was made. The KTGA has argued that implementing the full wage increase is impossible, because then it will bring their total cost of production to 54%.
