Privatization Commission plans to complete the sale of five state owned sugar mills by August 2018, clearing a major hurdle that has been protecting Kenya from influx of cheap sugar from regional countries.
The commission says the process of consultation with stakeholders has started and it will last for two months, thereafter the bids will be re-advertised for the interested parties to apply for a stake in any of the five millers.
Kenya has been enjoying safeguards from the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (Comesa) for the last decade, and privatisation is one of the conditions issued to the country before protection on cheap sugar comes to an end.
