Maize farmers in Nyamira county are worried that their maize harvest will significantly drop this year, due to the resurgence of the fall armyworm pest.

The county has so far lost 3,000 acres of crop to the destructive pest, and the county department of agriculture is appealing for urgent help from the national government, because the damaged land represents 10% of the county’s total acreage under maize. In the last year, Nyamira has seen its maize acreage drop from 50,000 to 30,000 due to the fall armyworm outbreak, and the farmers say it could even further if pests are not stopped.
