Ferry services at the Mtongwe channel have finally resumed, three months after they were suspended. Since last October, Mtongwe residents have been forced to use the congested Likoni channel. According to the Kenya Ferry Services, the now restored services were halted due to operational challenges.
The vessels were run down and were not safe to travel in. With the resumption of services, the KFS management is promising that there will be no suspension of services as there are enough ferries to serve commuters. Mtongwe residents who were pleased to have the ferry back as they would save on their transport costs. Some say they want the services to be available throughout the day, 7 days a week, to make it more convenient for those who want to cross the waters at hours that are not covered by the current schedule.
