Water shortage in Meru County might soon be a thing of the past after the County Government commissioned the drilling, casing and equipping of solar powered boreholes.
While Flagging off the drilling machines, Meru County Governor Kiraitu Murungi said the 100 boreholes are expected to be functional and supplying water by December. The Governor said Igembe region alone, which has had serious water shortage, will get 42 while 58 other boreholes will be distributed to other dry regions of the County. The community will form Boreholes Management Committees that will oversee the maintenance. To sustain the water supply, the hundred boreholes will be connected to the households using solar energy. 600 million shillings has been set aside to drill and equip 500 solar-powered boreholes.
