A hyena mauled a three-month-old baby girl that was sleeping outside the family home in Raya village in Sankuri location, Garissa Sub-County.
Zamzam Mahat was sleeping next to her mother outside their grass thatched house when the hyena sneaked into the homestead, snatched her away. The mother who did not immediately notice was only awakened by cries from the baby that was being mauled by the hyena a few meters away. Unfortunately by the time the mother got to the baby it was too late and the child succumbed to her head injuries.
Locals say their efforts to have the issue addressed by the local KWS office have not succeeded. The incident comes barely two weeks after a two-year-old boy was killed by a hyena in Dertu village, Ladgera constituency. Cases of human-wildlife conflict in the area have been on the rise because of drought and famine.
