The Government has made an application to the Capital Markets Authority to be exempted from the takeover and merger rules despite having its stake in the airline rise close to 50 per cent, putting it effectively in control of the national carrier.

The change in the ownership structure of Kenya Airways has come about following the conversion of various forms of debts owed by KQ to the Government into equity.
