Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i now says some of the contraband sugar impounded in warehouses around Nairobi contains mercury and copper.

The Interior CS said chemical analysis on some of the sacks of the seized sugar revealed they were unfit for human consumption. The sugar was seized in warehouses in Eastleigh, Ruiru and Nairobi’s Industrial Area. Police also impounded machines used to package and repackage the illegally imported sugar. Matiang’i made the revelations when he inspected the contraband sugar and other products at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations in Nairobi, warning that no unscrupulous trader will be spared in the war on contraband goods.
